This council will provide the SOA Research Division in the design, consideration and funding of practice research projects and experience studies that will explore issues unique to a wide range of dimensions of diversity, enabling SOA Research to provide to industries that involve actuarial practice insights that are relevant to dimensions of diversity.
Responsibilities & Duties
This role will identify issues and challenges unique to dimensions of diversity in industries that involve actuarial practice; maintain a forward-looking focus on the SOA's broad research programs to further encourage building diversity, equity and inclusion topics in SOA research; and work with partner organizations to further facilitate coordination and potential joint sponsorship of SOA research projects.
Time Commitment
5 to 10 hours
Meetings will be held three to four times per year. Meetings will typically be one hour in length and will be held via telephone or web-based conference calls. One of these meetings may be a one-day in-person meeting in the greater Chicago area or in a location convenient to the majority of the Council with travel expenses covered or reimbursed through the Research Division of the SOA.
Council members will be appointed to a term of three years. Initial appointments will have staggered terms in order to initiate approximately one-third of the Council turning over each year. Members may be appointed to unlimited consecutive terms.
Experience Required
Member ASA or FSA
Council members should fulfill a majority of the following qualifications to be considered for appointment:
- Mid- or senior-level professional
- Broad familiarity with practice areas of the actuarial profession
- Awareness and understanding of or willingness to become aware of and understand issues and challenges that are unique to diverse community groups in markets served by the SOA and its members, especially with respect to insurance and financial products and practices
- Interest in using research to identify opportunities for the insurance and financial industries to improve the reach of products and services available to diverse community groups
- Willingness to challenge historical beliefs and practices within the insurance and financial industries that may have led to disparate impacts for diverse community groups
- Ability and willingness to make the time commitment to actively participate
