How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?           

As part of the Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity, the Career Encouragement work group is made up of individuals that are interested in promoting the actuarial profession among students and educators in underrepresented groups to foster a diverse profession. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Support programs to promote the actuarial career among underrepresented students, educators, and career influencers in high schools, colleges, and universities including the following areas of focus:
    a. Program sessions and exhibiting opportunities about the actuarial career at conferences and programs focused on the target audience;
    b. Programs, scholarships and services providing support to individuals interested in the actuarial career;
    c. Volunteering time for mentorship, presentations and exhibits where needed; and
    d. Reviews and recommendations for updating the actuarial career website www.BeAnActuary.org.

    2. Engage with high schools and universities to provide connections to services and programs to further establish a pipeline for underrepresented students to actuarial science undergraduate programs.

    3. Identify organizations working towards diversity and inclusion in the actuarial profession and/or insurance industry, such as The Actuarial Foundation, IABA, OLA, Gamma Iota Sigma, and corporate D&I committees. Identify key contacts within each partner organization; establish regular communication between organizations to ensure coordinated activities and optimize the ways in which we support activities of our partners. Share best practices and ideas for initiatives. 

Time Commitment

21 to 40 hours

The work group has 1 monthly 1-hour call and periodic small group calls as needed. Volunteers may be asked to participate in events and exhibit opportunities in their hometown (if applicable) - or as subject matter experts in developing actuarial programming for students/teachers. 

Experience Required

SOA Member, Non-Member or Candidate 

  • Awareness of industry trends and issues around diversity and inclusion
  • Interest in increasing awareness of the actuarial profession and fostering a diverse profession
  • Ability/willingness to make the time commitment to actively participate
