How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession? *

Volunteers can help to provide objective analysis of extreme weather events, which results in providing the profession reliable and practical tools/information in an historical context.

Responsibilities & Duties *

• Work with SOA staff and Research Committees to organize and analyze climate data sources
• Build and evaluate tools that can help the actuarial profession increase its access to data trends, sources and risk analysis
• Study new databases and run exploratory tabulations and calculations for use in climate risk research
• Assist with data compilation and evaluation of data from GHCNDEX, the US Geological Survey, US Department of Agriculture and other publicly available weather data sources
• Assist with compilation and assessment of data that helps build the Actuaries Climate Index

Time Commitment - Hours *

21 to 40 hours

Time Commitment - Description *

• Approximately 1 - 2 hours per month to discuss data sources, provide input and direction on data analysis, and develop / code / implement data tools for the actuarial profession. Deeper analyses and tools development from time to time may take additional time.

Experience Required - Designation *

Member ASA or FSA

Experience Required - Description

• SOA Member, familiar with how data driven analysis can be practical for the actuarial profession would be preferred.
• Understand large datasets and be familiar with tools for downloading and querying data.
• Technical skills to work with large datasets using programming tools or languages such as R, SAS, C++ and/or VBA.
