How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?           

As part of the Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity, the Career Encouragement work group is made up of individuals that are interested in creating and maintaining a focus of diversity efforts towards increasing diversity within CAS and SOA leadership as well as management roles at their employers and sponsoring organizations. Members would work with nominating committees and committee leadership to develop a diverse pipeline of future leaders. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Address advancement of women and ethnic/racially diverse members in leadership roles;
  • Encourage and enable increasing diverse perspectives in leadership;
  • Build formal leadership pipelines via organizational committees and other groups;
  • Promote events where diverse members and candidates can safely network with other professionals in an inclusive environment, such as receptions at CAS and SOA meetings for LGBTQ members, IABA and OLA 

Time Commitment

  • 21-40 hours
  • Work group has 1 monthly 1-hour call and periodic small group calls as needed. Volunteers may be asked to participate in events if applicable. 

Experience Required

  • Member ASA or FSA
  • Awareness of industry trends and issues around diversity and inclusion
    Interest in increasing awareness of the actuarial profession and fostering a diverse profession
    Ability/willingness to make the time commitment to actively participate
