Are you a seasoned actuary with hands-on industry knowledge looking to inspire the next generation? Join our USA SOA Student Ambassador Program as a University Success Coach and make a direct impact to your future Student Ambassador and future actuaries!
 
Responsibilities & Duties
The Professional Mentor role is designed to bring real-world, practical experience directly into a college classroom setting. Sharing insights and practical applications of actuarial science. Offering guidance on the profession, whether students are taking their first exam or learning about career pathways.
 
Milestones of your volunteer work: 
One schedule event, either in-person or virtually, based on the best fit for your schedule and your Student Ambassador's academic calendar. 
One 1:1 check-in with your Student Ambassador. 
 
Details about the USA SOA Student Ambassador Team: 
You will have direct contact with a current USA Student Ambassador and the University Pipeline Specialist at SOA. Pairing is based on location to facilitate easier in-person engagement, though virtual collaboration is always an option.
 
How are the logistics handled?
The University Pipeline Specialist at SOA will provide support, ensuring a smooth and seamless process for both you and the Student Ambassador.
Your Student Ambassador will coordinate all logistics for the event, making them your primary on-campus point of contact.

4 or fewer hours
Time Commitment - Description *
The mentorship commitment runs from January 2026 until June 2027. Your yearly contribution includes one in-person or virtual event where the Student Ambassador is present to provide logistical support to their college and one 1:1 with your Student Ambassador.

To be a successful Professional Mentor: 
 
1. Hands-On Industry Knowledge: Bringing hands-on knowledge of the actuarial profession or a related field. This is the core value you bring to the classroom. You are the expert in the room, sharing your actuarial journey for students that want to follow this profession. 
 
2. Perspective on the Actuarial Path: Offer guidance to students who are in various stages of their journey. 
 
3. Mentoring: Connecting with your Student Ambassador for a 1:1 check-in. 

Opportunity Location
US ONLY: In person or Virtual
Travel Required
In-person (College) or virtual event
Location-Based Pairing: You will be paired with a Student Ambassador based on your geographical location in the USA to make in-person participation more feasible. If in-person travel is not possible, the event can be conducted virtually via a video conferencing platform. This offers the flexibility to engage with students regardless of location and eliminates the need for any travel.
