Responsibilities & Duties
The objective of the sponsored internship program is to demonstrate to employers that the knowledge students have gained through their actuarial education and the SOA credentialing examinations is applicable in a nontraditional role in a neighboring profession. In support of this, the SOA is sponsoring a summer internship program that will place candidates actively pursuing actuarial designations in nontraditional roles. The internships will span a 10-week period over the summer of 2017.
The SOA is in the process of securing employers for the program and anticipates placing 12 students. We expect many of the interns will be placed in analytics roles. Those employers look for candidates with a strong statistical background along with experience with statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R or the like). SOA staff will review resumes and coordinate scheduling phone interviews. The interviewers will serve as the first interview screen before applicants are recommended to employers for final interviews and selection.
Interviewers are responsible for the following:
- Interview actuarial students by telephone for placement at an SOA sponsored internship for summer 2017; interviewers must provide SOA staff with complete availability for interview schedule
- Ask questions about work/project history and performance in accordance with interview instructions to obtain specified information
- Identify and resolve inconsistencies in interviewees responses by means of appropriate questioning and/or explanation
- Exercise courtesy and professionalism to all interviewees
- Maintain confidentiality of all collected data
- Compile and record results and data from interview
- Make a recommendation to SOA Staff to move a recommended candidate to a participating company or to end the interview process for the individual
