This role supports the research activities of the SOA, providing actuaries with valuable up-to-the-minute data on climate related issues, enabling them to make more informed and accurate decisions.
Responsibilities & Duties
This research aims to tackle the critical issue of the enduring impact of climate anomaly-intensified extreme weather events on human health and healthcare infrastructure, and the challenges they pose for the future. By examining El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, a leading mode of climate anomaly, the research will quantify the relationship between historical extreme ENSO events and their impacts on both health losses and infrastructure demands, and price these risks using statistics derived from historical data. Combining these models with climate simulations, the research will project future ENSO intensities and their impact on the U.S. health insurance and healthcare industry. Research findings will provide vital insights for health actuaries and social planners to better account for climate risks, ensuring preparedness and resilience in the face of increasing climate anomalies.

Most time will be spent reviewing project deliverables by e-mail. It is anticipated there will be 3-4 Conference Calls to get group feedback from the POG for the research team.
