Young professionals now comprise 48% of SOA membership, playing a key role for the future of the organization and profession. This member segment is a growing group of current and future SOA leaders, as well as leaders within the actuarial profession. It is important that SOA develop a better understanding of the needs and wants of its Young Professional members. It is also important that the SOA provide programs and services that young professional members are seeking and will continue to drive the profession’s relevancy and expertise.
The Young Professional Advisory Council (YPAC) will provide input on SOA programs, services and specific communication delivery approaches that will increase engagement of young professionals. (For the purpose of this council, young professionals are SOA members within 10 years of receiving their ASA credential.)
Responsibilities & Duties
The SOA is seeking young professional members (SOA members within 10 years of receiving their ASA credential) to serve on the Young Professional Advisory Council.
The responsibilities of this volunteer role include:
- Provide feedback and recommendations on SOA programs, services and communications
- Learn what other organizations and associations are doing to engage young professionals
- Learn what employers are doing to engage young professionals and what employers are looking for from SOA regarding this member segment
- Provide input and develop strategies and tactics designed to encourage and increase engagement of young professionals with SOA and other members
- Provide input on trends you are witnessing within this group and how these trends may impact SOA
- Recommend potential micro-volunteer opportunities for other SOA young professionals
- Assist in developing and launching existing engagement tactics such as contests (2 contests per year); virtual networking events; and content planning and development of the Emerging Leaders Summit
- Identify additional ways to encourage young professionals to develop their leadership skills

Term Length and Time Commitment
- Serve a two-year term
- 10-15 hours per year in addition to council meeting calls
- Ten (10) one-hour conference calls
- YPAC members will have the opportunity to participate in a face-to-face meeting if one is offered
- Leadership Opportunities – Chair and Co-chair of the Young Professional Advisory Council – increased time commitment of 3-6 hours per year
Experience Required
- SOA members within 10 years of receiving their ASA credential
- Some familiarity with current SOA programs and services
