How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?

The SOA Ambassador Program assists in carrying out programs in regions outside the U.S. and Canada (excluding markets included in the China, Greater Asia & Latin America Committees). The Ambassador Program helps to identify and develop subjects of international interest for communication to SOA members in different areas of the world.  It aims to help the actuarial profession grow in underdeveloped areas and functions as a valuable link between the SOA and local actuarial organizations and clubs.

Responsibilities & Duties

The Ambassador is a key player in helping to fulfill the SOA Mission (Through education and research, the SOA advances actuaries as leaders in measuring and managing risk to improve financial outcomes for individuals, organizations, and the public) and Vision (Actuaries are highly sought-after professionals who develop and communicate solutions for complex financial issues).

SOA Ambassadors are carefully selected from top volunteers and appointed by the Ambassador Program Oversight Committee (APOC) for a (potentially renewable) term of 3 years in their country of residence after a vetting process with APOC.

Expected duties of the Ambassador include:

  • Develop SOA’s relationship with members and candidates in your region.
  • Assist in carrying out the SOA’s activities in your country to help meet the membership’s needs for continuing professional development (CPD), education, research and networking.
  • Identify and/or develop content:
    • publishing articles in The Actuary or e-news, section newsletters or podcasts
    • speaking in sessions at SOA meetings or regional events
    • securing papers on significant international developments to share with membership
    • supplying international publications and resources to be included in the SOA library and website
    • serving as a valuable resource and link between the SOA, actuarial organizations, universities and actuarial clubs
  • Submit a workplan at the beginning of the year detailing the activities you plan to execute, timeline, and potential resources needed from the SOA. It is the responsibility of the Ambassador to ensure that resources (staff, budget, technical) are approved and available prior to commitments.
  • Report on the results of the workplan during mid-year and end-of-year
  • Regularly review content and links on your country Ambassador webpage.
  • When applicable, assist with SOA’s delegation visits to your region. Provide guidance and expertise on local market, assist in arranging meetings and logistics as the point-person for the delegation.

Time Commitment

  • 3-year Term (potentially renewable)
  • Ambassador Town Hall Meeting each quarter for 1 hour.
  • Time spent on in-country activities as Ambassador varies each year in accordance with the commitment in the annual workplan during the 3-year term of service.

Experience Required

  • Must be an active member of the Society of Actuaries and current on SOA membership dues.
  • ASA or FSA credential required.
  • Must live in country of representation and expect to reside there for the next 3 years.
  • Should be fluent in the local language and in English (where the local language is not English).
  • Individual must have the willingness to perform basic duties as  
  • The Ambassador is a key leader on behalf of the SOA in the country of representation. Good relationships and influence with members, candidates, and the local/national actuarial association are essential.

Local travel (within country) could occasionally be needed to host Professional Development and networking events, university outreach or other types of relationships to engage members/candidates.
