How does this role benefit the broader actuarial profession?
Young professionals play a key role for the future of the organization and profession. This member segment is a growing group of current and future SOA leaders, as well as leaders within the actuarial profession. It is important that SOA continue to enrich it’s understanding of the needs and wants of Young Professional members. It is also important that the SOA provide programs and services of interest and will continue to drive the profession’s relevancy and expertise. The Young Professional Advisory Council (YPAC) will provide input on SOA programs, services and specific communication delivery approaches that will increase engagement of young professionals and those interested in the actuarial profession. (For the purpose of this council, young professionals are SOA members within 10 years of receiving their ASA credential.)
This is a two-year term that runs from November 1, 2026 through October 31, 2028.
What professional benefits will a volunteer gain from this role?
Volunteers serving on the Young Professionals Advisory Council will have the opportunity to expand their professional network, build leadership and communication skills, and increase their visibility within the SOA and broader actuarial profession. Members will gain experience collaborating with peers, contributing to strategic discussions, supporting engagement initiatives, and sharing insights on the needs and interests of young professionals. This role also provides volunteers with a deeper understanding of SOA programs, services, and member engagement efforts, while offering a meaningful opportunity to help shape the profession's future.
Responsibilities & Duties
The SOA is seeking young professional members (SOA members within 10 years of receiving their ASA credential) to serve on the Young Professional Advisory Council. The responsibilities of this volunteer role include: -Provide feedback and recommendations on SOA programs, services and communications
-Host one podcast to support the YPAC monthly Podcast Series -Learn what other organizations and associations are doing to engage young professionals -Share what employers are doing to engage young professionals and what employers are looking for from SOA regarding this member segment -Provide input and develop strategies and tactics designed to encourage and increase engagement of young professionals with SOA and other members -Provide input on trends you are witnessing within this group and how these trends may impact SOA -Recommend potential micro-volunteer opportunities for other SOA young professionals -Support various subgroup activities to assist in developing and launching engagement tactics such as contests, professional development, communication strategies and Affiliate member support. Subgroups may require additional meetings. -Identify additional ways to encourage young professionals to develop their leadership skills

Travel Required

YPAC members will have the opportunity to participate in a face-to-face meeting if one is offered

Travel Reimbursement

YPAC members may have the opportunity to participate in an in-person meeting, if offered. Approved travel expenses related to SOA-sponsored YPAC meetings may be reimbursed in accordance with SOA travel guidelines.

Reimbursable expenses may include coach airfare or comparable transportation, standard single-occupancy lodging for approved meeting dates, baggage fees for one bag each way, meals within SOA’s established reimbursement limits, and reasonable internet access expenses. Upgrades, extended stays, guest expenses, and other personal expenses are not reimbursable.
Additional details and reimbursement instructions will be provided to volunteers before any in-person meeting.
