How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?
This role supports the education and credential activities of the SOA, continually developing pertinent content, both foundational and advanced, to ensure the integrity of the SOA's credentials. The work can be used to satisfy continuing education requirements if deemed appropriate and it is a chance to give back and participate in the process of helping to develop and select new FSAs.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • The GH Curriculum Committee sets the learning objectives for the GH FSA track. That includes both the FSA exams (syllabus development) and FSA modules (content development and maintenance).
  • Specifically we are looking for a member with expertise in EE benefit consulting space. Secondly, we are looking for a member with expertise in US reserving/financial reporting/ M&A type activities.  However, if you would like to be a member and have other areas of expertise, feel free to apply. 
  • Serving on a curriculum committee really gives you the opportunity to understand and shape the education of future actuaries.
  • Participate in G&H curriculum committee efforts to identify, review, and select new syllabus material.
  • Initiate development of curriculum material either by writing yourself or recruiting and supervising others to write.
  • Ensure the FSA learning objectives and outcomes are appropriate and complete. 

Time Commitment

  • 41 to 60 hours
  • Annually about 40 hours:
    • Two 1.5 day face-to-face curriculum meetings per year (approx. April and Sep/Oct).
    • 4 hours of conference calls and 10 hours in preparing reviewing material in preparation for meetings and through-out the year.
  • Additional 20 hours+:   

*Not every year for each member but up to additional 20 hours if you are writing a study note or recruiting and supervising study note authors.                                                    

 Experience Required

  • FSA with experience in GH area of practice.
  • As mentioned above, specifically looking for someone with expertise in EE benefits and US reserving/financial reporting.
  • Compliant with SOA Conflict of Interest policy and Confidentiality Agreement
  • Familiarity with course of reading, nature of SOA examinations and practice area(s) relevant to Track
