How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?
The committee oversees the DEI strategic research program, including developing and prioritizing practical application research projects that intersect with DEI topics and actuarial practice. This strategic research program scope is primarily U.S.-focused.
Responsibilities & Duties
Ideation, development, and prioritization of relevant practical application research projects are the primary responsibility. Committee members meet monthly and occasionally meet in subgroups to further develop specific topic ideas, develop requests for proposals, and review proposals received. Steering committee members are also expected to serve on at least one research project oversight group (POG) during the year.
Time Commitment - Description *
Steering committee itself: 11-20 hours per year. Monthly 1-hour steering committee calls and a few additional calls for further developing research project ideas, requests for proposals, and proposal reviews. Project Oversight Group (POG) time commitments vary, but most are an 11-20 hour commitment over roughly 9 months. Most POGs meet monthly (virtually) with the researchers for 1-hour project status calls to provide guidance, and oversight. POG members review the draft research report for substantive completeness and clarity and to ensure the project meets its objectives.
