How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?
In the recent communication to Society of Actuaries (SOA) members and candidates “SOA President on Equality: Our Call to Action”, there is a call for the SOA to dedicate a portion of its ongoing research efforts to exploring issues unique to communities of color in America, and more broadly on issues that are unique to various dimensions of population diversity in markets served by the SOA and its members. One issue identified and desired to be researched further is the access to and outcomes of healthcare expenditures and property risks stemming from extreme climate events. A primary focus and initial report release will be the extreme precipitation and flood events caused by tropical storms and hurricanes during June – November of past years (2017-2019), noting any objective disparate impact on health care cost and utilization and impact on personal property for these events. The project should also focus on pulling in observations for periodic updates to the initial report as data can be gathered from 2020. This can give not only a recent historical reporting on disparate impacts, but also further identify how events are continuing in real time in 2020.
This role supports the research activities of the SOA, providing actuaries with valuable up-to-the-minute data on climate related issues, enabling them to make more informed and accurate decisions.

It will oversee the Project and provide any direction the research team may need regarding its research plan and the acceptability of Project deliverables. The POG will consult with the research team and determine, based on the nature of the Project, the frequency with which it would like to receive progress reports, and will provide feedback or suggestions as appropriate regarding the research.
