Description:

How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?

You will join a high caliber group of actuaries to construct the FSA level exam for the CFE FD track. Through the exam development process, your contribution will ensure the integrity of the SOA’s credentials.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Work with a vice-chair of the exam committee and develop drafts questions and rubric based on assigned readings (~100-200 pages). The questions will need to appropriately reflect the exam syllabus and address the learning outcomes.
  • If your submitted draft is chosen for the exam, you may be invited to an in-person trip in April (location and timing TBD).
  • There is a parallel volunteer group that grades the exam. You are encouraged to participate in the grading of your question, but not required.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with the SOA Education Confidentiality Agreement

Time Commitment

  • For experienced writers, it could be as little as a couple of Saturdays, plus occasional updates as the committee reviews your question and provides feedback.
  • For new writers, it could take longer (potentially twice as long), and your vice chair will be there to support you throughout the exam development cycle.

The high-level timing is as follows:

  • Jan: Join the kickoff conference call, hosted by the exam committee
  • Feb to Mar: Develop the draft question
  • Mar: Submit draft for consideration to be on the exam
  • Apr: Question Review Seminar (in person trip)
  • May: Refine draft questions
  • June: Submit final draft

  • Successful completion of the CFEFD exam is helpful but not required.
