Volunteers can help to provide objective analysis of extreme weather events, which results in providing the profession reliable and practical extreme weather data tools and information regarding an extreme weather event, in an historical context.
Responsibilities & Duties
Work with SOA staff and Research Committees to organize and analyze climate data sources
• Develop tools and utilize programming skills to perform analyses on publicly available extreme weather data to draft brief reports soon after extreme weather events for publication on the SOA website.
• Build and evaluate tools that can help the actuarial profession increase its access to data trends, sources and risk analysis • Study new databases and run exploratory tabulations and calculations for use in climate risk research
• Assist with data compilation and evaluation of data from GHCNDEX, the US Geological Survey, US Department of Agriculture and other publicly available weather data sources.
Time Commitment - Description *
Approximately 1 - 2 hours per month to discuss data sources, provide input and direction on data analysis, and develop / code / implement data tools for the actuarial profession. Deeper analyses and tools development, as well as analysis write-ups for publication from time to time may take additional time.

Experience Required - Description
• SOA Member, familiar with how data driven analysis can be practical for the actuarial profession would be preferred.
• Understand large datasets and be familiar with tools for downloading and querying data.
• Technical skills to work with large datasets using programming tools or languages such as Python, R, SAS, C++ and/or VBA.
• Familiarity with GitHub repositories and Jupiter Notebooks, a plus.
