This role supports the education and credential activities of the SOA, continually developing pertinent content, both foundational and advanced, to ensure the integrity of the SOA’s credentials.
Description
The SOA is looking for actuaries with experience in Group & Health or related areas to sort and/or grade exam papers for:
- Group & Health Specialty Exam
- Group & Health Finance and Valuation Exam
- Group & Health Design and Pricing Exam
*You will select one G&H exam that you prefer to sort/grade for within the application form.
*You can either be a Sorter or Grader, but not both.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the SOA Education Confidentiality Agreement.
- Sorting/Grading process starts with the SOA mailing sorting/grading packages to each Sorter/Grader with overnight delivery on Friday, May 15, 2020.
- Sorting:
- Each Sorter will be given 3 to 4 questions to sort, so 60 to 80 exam papers in total to review. For each paper, the Sorter is asked to assess the quality of the candidate’s answer as “definite pass”, “marginal pass”, “Marginal fail” or “definite fail”.
- Sorters are asked to submit sorting results by Thursday, May 28th.
- No travel is involved for Sorters.
- Grading:
- Each Grader will grade approximately 1-2 exam questions; the Grader will grade 10 common questions independently and then review them with their grading partner(s) to ensure consistency in grading. Then the Grader will continue to grade their remaining questions on their own.
- Graders are asked to complete and submit their first round of grading results by Tuesday, May 26th.
- Papers that need to be graded a second time must be completed before or at the Central Grading meeting.
- Central Grading starts with breakfast on Friday, June 5th with attendees expected to travel on Thursday. The meeting ends late Saturday, June 6th with most attendees departing on Sunday, June 7th.
- All graders are required to attend the Central Grading meeting in person and must not travel outside of Canada and the United States from Friday, May 15th through Saturday, June 6th.
Time Commitment
- Sorters generally sort 3-4 exam questions.
- Sorters generally take about 10 hours to sort their questions.
- Graders generally grade 1-2 exam questions.
- Graders generally take about 10 to 20 hours to grade their question.
Experience Required
- Must be FSA
- Must have expertise in at least part of the Group and Health exam syllabus
- Individuals pursuing their ERM designation are ineligible to volunteer for G & H Exam activities

Travel Required
- Only graders are required to travel; sorting is done at sorter’s home or place of work.
- Graders are required to travel to one off-site Central Grading meeting in Toronto, Canada, in June 2020.
- NOTE: A current passport is generally required for travel between the US and Canada.
- Graders must travel on Thursday, June 4th, with the Central Grading meeting beginning early morning of Friday, June 5th and continuing through the afternoon of Saturday, June 6th.
SOA Training Required
Inexperienced graders will be mentored by experienced graders on how to grade. There is a webinar offered by the SOA a few weeks before the grading process begins for less-experienced graders.
