Responsibilities & Duties

Activities and Time: Subgroup activity follows the cycle of producing the report. This involves designing the data request, soliciting contributors, designing the structure of the experience study, analyzing the data and preparing a report. Direct activity of the Subgroup is high during the data request, analysis and report preparation stages. A Subgroup member should expect to:

  • Actively participate in 1 hour monthly Subgroup communication conference calls throughout the entire cycle (frequency may increase to every other week during the analysis and reporting writing stages, which may begin at the time data first becomes available and end at the time that the final report on the data is published).
  • Introduce or promptly review proposals for any matters in producing the study (e.g. new forms of analysis or resolution of open issues).

Time Commitment

  • 21 to 40 hours
  • A member should plan, at a minimum, to be on the Subgroup for the full cycle of producing an experience study. The length of that is 18-24 months, depending on the amount and quality of the data received. Upon completion of the report, Subgroup members will be asked if they wish to continue.

Experience Required

  • SOA Members, Non-Members and Candidates may apply
  • Members should have significant expertise and experience in the Deferred Annuity field and mortality experience studies in particular. The Actuarial Subgroup members are generally SOA members, but SOA membership is not a requirement.
