Responsibilities & Duties

The Taxation Section produces three issues per year of the section newsletter, Taxing Times.  Staff editors of Taxing Times are responsible for the newsletter’s publication.  While the editorial board has responsibility for overall content, staff editors guide the publication process through recruiting authors, facilitating review of submitted articles, and reviewing the final layout of the newsletter prior to the publication.  A rough idea of the key responsibilities and time commitments is as follows

  • Initial board meeting call and follow-up emails (2 hours per issue plus follow-up emails)
  • First round of article submissions (4-5 hours per issue - editorial board works directly with authors)
  • Coordinate review to the editorial board and authors (3 hours per issue)
  • Review Copy Edit files (2-3 hours per issue)
  • Review Galley Proofs (2-3 hours per issue)
  • Coordinate with SOA editorial staff to meet review and publishing deadlines

Time Commitment

  • Roughly 20 hours per issue
  • Work is labor intensive during a short period of time leading up to the print deadline 

Experience Required

  • Member of the Taxation Section
  • Fluency in English language – writing and grammar
  • Good organizational skills to guide each newsletter issue through the publication process
