This role supports the education and credential activities of the SOA by continually developing pertinent exam content, both foundational and advanced, to ensure the integrity of the SOA's credentials. The work can be used to satisfy continuing education requirements if deemed appropriate and it is a chance to give back and participate in the process of helping to develop new FSAs. 

Description

The exam Vice Chair is responsible for development of quality exam questions in accordance with SOA guidance and best practices. Some positions may also entail oversight of the grading process for assigned exam content. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Work with item writers and expert item writers to draft and revise exam questions for assigned Learning Objectives
  • Oversee grading process – including construction of model solutions – for assigned material
  • Ensure assigned tasks/output is completed by applicable deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the SOA Volunteer Agreement 

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 20-40 hours at home over a 6-month period plus attendance at 2-4 exam development meetings (June – January for DP and Specialty; January – July for FV).
  • Additional time to attend meetings as outlined below 

Experience Required

  • Must be FSA
  • Must have expertise in at least part of the Group and Health exam syllabus
  • Must have experience writing and revising quality exam questions
  • Individuals pursuing their ERM designation are ineligible to volunteer for G & H Exam activities 

Opportunity Location

  • US and Canada Only 

Travel Required

  • Attendance at question writing sessions – typically two Friday-Sunday meetings a year
  • Attendance at Central Grading in June and December
  • Attendance at Central Review
