Description:

How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?

This role supports the research activities of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Research Advisory Council (DEIRAC). Project Oversight Group volunteers help ensure a high-quality SOA research product that will educate and inform the profession, helping to identify ways to improve actuarial products, services, or tools in ways that serve the public more equitably. This research project is to identify and aggregate data or key results from existing or supplemental new research projects across various sources that study the disparate impact on racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. for a broad array of insurance, retirement and financial products and services. The goal is twofold:

  • To understand more deeply and broadly the combined effects of disparate impacts of these products and services on racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and demographic groups. The SOA is especially interested in the reasons that the disparate impacts exist other than because of employment status, income or wealth.
  • To create metrics that evaluate changes in disparities or inequities historically as well as for future measurement and monitoring.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • finalize the project scope and set expectations in collaboration with the researcher,
  • provide guidance to researchers in the form of insights, experience, expertise and knowledge,
  • review draft material and provide feedback to the researcher, and
  • advise on appropriate forms of dissemination of results.

Time Commitment

  • Estimated time commitment is 1-3 hours per month, including 1-hour conference calls, throughout the project. Most research projects last for 6-9 months.
  • Most of time will be spent reviewing materials and providing feedback on conference calls and/or by email.
