How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession? *

This role supports the education and credentialing activities of the SOA, in particular the grading for the Predictive Analytics exams, to ensure the integrity of the SOA’s credentials.

Responsibilities & Duties *

The SOA is looking for volunteers to support Exam PA (Predictive Analytics), a 3.5-hour exam requiring analysis of a data set in the context of a business problem and responses to questions.
Volunteers need be familiar with the assigned syllabus and exam materials and commit to grading exams on the scheduled timeline. The PA exam is offered twice each year.
The responsibilities and duties include:
• Reading and understanding assigned syllabus material
• Attending grader training (virtual), and central grading (in person, if possible)
• Grading assigned exam questions
• Working reliably, and with grading committee leadership
• Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with the SOA Education Confidentiality Agreement

Time Commitment - Hours *

21 to 40 hours

Time Commitment - Description *

• 20-30 hours per exam administration
For the spring PA Exam grading typically involves 20-30 hours of grading over three weeks in Late April and May to initially grade exam questions, and attendance at a 2-day Central Grading session in early June to finalize the grading.
• For the April 2023 PA exam, Central Grading will take place on June 10th and 11th in Portland, OR.
For the fall PA Exam initial grading will take place over three weeks in Late October and November with a 2-day Central Grading session in early December.

Experience Required - Designation *

Member ASA or FSA

Experience Required - Description

• Must be FSA or Career ASA (5+ years as ASA and not pursuing the FSA designation)
• Predictive analytics knowledge on some portion of the syllabus via prior training or practical experience
• As R is used in the exam, ability to interpret R code in RStudio for grading
Welcome, but Optional Experience
• Proficiency in reading and understanding French
• Experience translating French documents

Travel Required *

Graders should be prepared to attend the Central Grading meeting in person, if possible.

SOA Training Required *

If new to exam grading, the volunteer will go through the on-line training course provided by the SOA.
