Description:

How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?

Our industry is changing, and the SOA has teamed up with start-up incubator Plug & Play to keep actuaries on the front line of innovation. The SOA has joined the ranks of Plug & Play's advisor companies and will host “office hours” with start-ups over a three-week period in April 2022. An office hour session with a startup provides an opportunity for founders and leadership of new InsurTech companies to seek the advice of SOA members as they build their companies.

Responsibilities & Duties

We're looking for SOA members to serve as advisors for office hour sessions. Advisors will provide feedback on a variety of topics within the actuarial field, as well as offer deep expertise and domain knowledge. If you can provide great advice to a startup in the insurance field, please apply.

After you apply, we’ll send a quick questionnaire to collect additional information on your interests.

Timeline:

  • Friday, February 25, at 5 p.m. Central Time - SOA volunteer application deadline
  • March - Selection results communicated to applicants
  • Early April - Advisors are notified of startup matching results and provided with InsurTech profiles. Advising sessions will be comprised of one actuary and one start-up.
  • Virtual meetings take place: April 11-29, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET
  • Late April/Early May - Collect feedback from advisors

Time Commitment

5-10 hours

Each actuary typically participates in 2 office hour sessions, each lasting for 45 minutes. We will provide short bios and company overviews of the startups seeking advice for you to review prior to the call.
