This role supports the research activities of the SOA, providing actuaries with valuable up-to-the-minute data on climate related issues, enabling them to make more informed and accurate decisions.
Responsibilities & Duties
This research looks to evaluate the pathways through which insurance frameworks can lead to measurable long-term disaster risk reduction, market stability, and adaptive capacity. The scope is organized around three pillars where insurance and physical risk reduction intersections are modeled via case studies, namely: 1) Frameworks that reward risk reduction via premium rate-making mechanisms; 2) How rapid cash infusions fund real-time physical triage shortening the disaster recovery window and protecting natural assets and human capital; 3) Evaluating public rate filings alongside statutory adaptation frameworks and examining structured community check-in networks and local social adaptation capacity to evaluate how they reduce excess morbidity, mortality, and emergency service surges during extreme climate events.
This research, from the perspective of actuaries in multiple practice areas, aims to identify resilience programs that preserve insurability, reduce expected and tail losses, and improve adaptive capacity across different domains of risk.
The Project Oversight Group (“POG”) will oversee the research project and work closely with the research team and the SOA Research Institute to review the acceptability of project deliverables and provide feedback or suggestions as appropriate regarding the progressing research

Most time will be spent reviewing project deliverables by e-mail. It is anticipated there will be 4 Conference Calls to get group feedback from the Project Oversight Group (POG) for the research team. The anticipated length of the research project is about six months.
