Responsibilities & Duties

Graders are expected to commit to grading (on average) 1-2 hours per month, which equates to 5-10 submissions per week, on a consistent basis. This time commitment is flexible, so you may grade at any point that is most convenient for you. We ask all graders to commit to remain on the EMA grading committee for at least one year.    

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of assessment grading in the SOA Learning Management System (LMS) and process for accurately entering grades and feedback, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates complete knowledge and understanding of the goals, tasks and solutions (as appropriate) for assigned assessment
  • Responsible for maintaining personal grading schedule
    • Selects submissions from the grading queue and assigns a grade in a timely fashion
    • Communicates grading availability via the grading Commitment Calendar
    • Attends virtual training sessions as necessary
  • Provides effective feedback for failing candidates using grading rubrics and scoring documents
  • Informs Grading Chair of issues
  • Liaises with Assessment Grading Chair, Assessment Graders and SOA Staff

Experience Required

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) or Career ASA (5+ years as ASA and not pursuing the FSA designation)
  • Demonstrates effective written communication skills in English and/or French
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technical and analytic problem solving across a wide variety of topics

Training

Graders are trained via online reading material, sample paper grading and an optional conference call with the Grading Chair.  Graders will have the opportunity to ask questions and chat with other graders.   Attendance at the meetings is optional, but encouraged. Recordings of training calls will be available to new graders.

Technology Required
