How does this role benefit the work of the organization and the profession?

The 4th Edition of the Tiller Textbook was last revised in 2015. In the past seven years there have been significant changes in the insurance industry which require updating of this critical tool. Some areas to be addressed include: the full implication of PBR reserving; impact of Covid-19 (pandemics in general); financial recession (availability or lack thereof of capital) resulting from the pandemic; Insurtech; AI underwriting; and YRT premium adjustment arbitration.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Review the subject matter for the specific chapter from the 4th edition. See the attached Preface from the 4th Edition for a brief summary of the chapter subject matter. Tiller_Textbook_4th_Edition_Preface.pdf 
  • Make recommendations for changes to be included in the 5th edition
  • Peer review the specific chapter material within a timely manner (TBD) when the drafted material becomes available
  • Peer review the final specific chapter material within a timely manner (TBD) when the final version of the material becomes available
    • At which time the volunteer will sign-off on the peer review completion.
  • Be available for scheduled conference calls (the frequency TBD)

Time Commitment

  • Between 5 and 7 hours for the peer review
  • Calls will be no more than one-hour and the frequency has not been determined yet
  • Project is expected to begin in July 2022 and conclude by the end of 2024

Experience Required

FSAs with expertise with reinsurance issues and related topics covered in the selected chapter (i.e., chapter on US accounting would require knowledge about the impact on reinsurance financial reporting under US statutory accounting, etc.)

Can be done from anywhere. All calls will be virtual.
