Grading FAP Final Assessments allows ASA candidates to continue their journey to Associateship through the completion of their ASA e-Learning modules. By allowing candidates proceed through their ASA pathway and obtain a designation, volunteers are upholding the integrity of the profession, and working to ensure the future of the profession by creating new actuaries that meet the rigorous educational standards of the Society of Actuaries.
Responsibilities & Duties
Graders are expected to commit to grading 15-30 hours per year, with flexibility based on your preference and availability. Grading can be performed from home or work via the e-Learning system. We ask all graders to commit to remain on the committee for at least one year.
- Demonstrates complete knowledge and understanding of the goals, tasks and solutions (as appropriate) for assigned assessment
- Grades each Final Assessment submission within approximately 72 hours of accepting it into their queue
- Attends training (virtually) for each new assessment
- Informs Grading Chairperson of issues
- Communicates grading availability via the grading Commitment Calendar
- Liaises with e-Learning Assessment Grading Chairperson for assigned assessment, Assessment Graders, and SOA Staff
Time Commitment
- We ask that you grade at least 30 Final Assessment submissions per year (approximately 15 hours of grading)
- Final Assessment grades are released on a set schedule, allowing for a flexible time commitment at predictable times of year.
- Typical grading windows take place February-March, June-July, and October-November.
- Select one Final Assessment to focus on each year, during a specific window that best fits your schedule.
- Or grade a smaller number of submissions but contribute across multiple FA grading windows.
Experience Required
- Must be FSA or Career ASA (5+ years as ASA and not pursuing the FSA designation)
- Demonstrates proficiency in written communication skills in English and/or French
- Graders are expected to maintain confidentiality of Final Assessment materials.
- Demonstrates proficiency in technical and analytic problem solving (graders are exposed to a wide variety of topics and solutions and must be flexible enough to competently review)

Travel Required
None required. US and Canadian residents have the option to travel twice per year.
SOA Training Required
New graders are trained via online reading material, sample paper grading and a conference call with the grading chair. Training sessions are offered with the release of every new Final Assessment.
