This role supports the SOA's regulator-education mission by keeping the LEARN (Life Education and Reinsurance Navigation) reinsurance curriculum accurate and current. The volunteer refreshes the presentation deck used to educate state insurance regulators, ensuring the material reflects today's reinsurance market, current NAIC and statutory requirements, and recent topics shaping the industry. Up-to-date, credible content strengthens regulators' understanding of reinsurance and reinforces the actuarial profession's role as a trusted, objective technical resource.
Responsibilities & Duties
This role supports the education activities of the SOA by maintaining the integrity and relevance of LEARN's reinsurance teaching materials. Specific duties include reviewing the existing Life & Health Reinsurance deck; identifying outdated content researching and incorporating current data, regulation, and recent reinsurance topics; updating slides, charts, citations, and references for accuracy; and coordinating with the LEARN team and volunteer leads through periodic review calls to finalize the refreshed material.

Time Commitment - Description *
The time commitment will vary depending on the number of volunteers. Total project-based engagement of roughly 30–50 hours over a four-to-six-month period. For one person that would be 5-10 hours per month on your own schedule and at your own pace.
The work includes an initial content review, research and drafting of updates, and participation in periodic (approximately monthly) one-hour review calls with the LEARN working group. Work between milestones is flexible and self-paced.

Strong working knowledge of life and/or health reinsurance, including treaty structures, risk transfer requirements, reserve credit security, and current NAIC/statutory regulation. Comfort researching current market data and translating technical material into clear, regulator-friendly slides. ASA or FSA required; subject-matter expertise in reinsurance preferred.
