The SOA is looking for actuaries with experience in Group & Health or related areas to grade answers for Group & Health Advanced Exam
Responsibilities & Duties
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the SOA Education Confidentiality Agreement
- Grading process starts with the SOA mailing grading packages to each Grader with overnight delivery on Friday, May 11, 2018.
- Two to four graders are assigned to a question based on the size of the question. In the grading package are 10 common questions that each grader independently grades, then reviews with their grading partner(s) to ensure consistency in grading. After the 10 common questions process is completed, then each grader continues to grade the rest of their papers.
- Graders are asked to complete their first round grading by Tuesday, May 29, 2018.
- Based on first-round grading statistics provided by the SOA, the Chairperson determines the list of papers that need to be graded a second time.
- Papers that need to be graded a second time are completed before or at the Central Grading meeting. Consensus on final grading scores among grading partners occurs at the Central Grading meeting.
- Central Grading meeting starts with breakfast on Friday, June 8, 2018 with attendees expected to travel on Thursday. The meeting ends late Saturday with most attendees departing on Sunday.
- All graders are required to attend the Central Grading meeting in person, and must not travel outside of Canada and the United States from Friday, May 11th through Friday, June 8th, 2018.
Time Commitment
- Exam questions generally range from about 4 to 12 points. Graders generally take about 10 to 20 hours to grade their question.
Experience Required
- Must be FSA designation
- Must have expertise in at least part of the Group and Health exam syllabus
- Individuals pursuing their ERM designation are ineligible to volunteer for G & H Exam activities

Travel Required
- Travel to one off-site Central Grading meeting
- Graders must travel on Thursdays, with the Central Grading meeting beginning early Friday morning and continuing through Saturday afternoon
SOA Training Required
Inexperience graders will be mentored by experienced graders on how to grade. There is a webinar offered by the SOA a few weeks before the grading process begins for less-experienced graders.
